Sony’s CMOS sensors are very popular in todays digital cameras and smartphones, and the company’s newest sensor shows exactly why. The new IMX318 sensor is designed specifically for smartphones and it boasts 22.5 megapixel photos, 4K videos, hybrid autofocus, and built-in 3-axis image stabilization.
The new 1/2.6-inch CMOS sensor is smaller, has better image quality, and performs faster compared to its predecessors. Sony claims that it’s the world’s first sensor to offer built-in high-speed hybrid autofocus that merges phase detection AF with contrast detection AF. The AF feature performs as fast as .03 seconds, and .017 seconds during 60fps video recording.
Aside from the hybrid autofocus, another industry first is the built-in 3-axis electronic image stabilization, which helps you capture smooth video despite jarring and shaky hand movement. The image-stabilizer is build directly into the sensors internal signal processor, and it also fixes lens distortion is addition to camera shake. Sony says that the image stabilization system in this sensor will make it a great candidate for drones.
The new Sony IMX318 sensor will start shipping out to camera companies in May 2016.
