Our long-time sports workshop instructor Brad Smith was one of two new members appointed to NPPA’s board of directors by NPPA President Melissa Lyttle. Smith and visual journalist Chelsea Matiash have agreed to terms to fill two of the NPPA’s three appointed board seats. The third presidentially-appointed board member, Danese Kenon, agreed to remain on the panel for another year. Brad and Chelsea are replacing Director Alex Garcia and Ray Shepherd’s vacant positions.
“I’m always looking to involve people with good ideas and energy, who are willing to roll up their sleeves and get dirty,” Lyttle said.
“Chealsea and Brad have impressed me with their willingness to dive in, with ideas for growing our membership, educating existing members who may be transitioning from staff to freelance about the business of photograph, as well as mentoring student members who are just beginning their careers. Both are excited to help create awareness about NPPA and help prove the worth of an NPPA membership.”
Brad is the former director of photography for Time Inc’s Sports Group, where he oversaw the photographic content of Sports Illustrated, Sports Illustrated for Kids, and Golf magazine in both print and digital formats. Prior to that, Smith spent 12 years at The New York Times as a sports picture editor where he won multiple editing awards. Chealsea Matiash is the deputy multimedia editor for TIME magazine. She used to be the picture editor for The Wall Street Journal, and she was editor of The Wall Street Journal’s official photography blog, Photo Journal. Before The Wall Street Journal, she was a picture editor and supervisor for The Associated Press.
