An Easy Way To Memorize the F-Stop Scale

Have you ever wondered how much more light an f/1.4 aperture lets in than an f/2.8 aperture? Well the answer might surprise you, because while f/1.4 might seem to be half the size of f/2.8, it actually lets in a total of four times more light.

This video presents a great way to visualize and understand how to jump from one aperture value to the next and understand just how much light availability your are gaining or losing.

It’s also great at pointing out the reason why lenses with low aperture values (f/1.4 or f/2) are so much more expensive than lenses with higher values (f/4 or f/5.6), because they can take in an incredibly higher amount of light.
