Nikon has announced a completely new line of premium compact cameras called the DL series. The DL series (Digital Lens) is geared toward serious photographers and packs powerful 1-inch sensors into the cameras. The DL series has launched with three initial cameras, the DL 18-50 f/1.8-2.8, DL 24-85 f/1.8-2.8, and DL 24-500 f/2.8-5.6.

Inside each camera is a 20.8mp CX-format 1-inch BSI CMOS sensor with a maximum ISO of up to 12800. The lenses and physical design are the main differences between the cameras. The cameras feature three different focal ranges, 24-85mm, 18-50mm, and 24-500mm. The DL 24-500mm is the bigger and bulkier superzoom camera of the series, while the DL 24-85 and DL 18-50 are smaller and more compact.

Each of the lenses features a manual focus ring, a flouring coating for repelling dirt/water/oil, and a Nano Crystal Coat for reducing ghosting and flaring.

On the back of each camera is a high-resolution 1.037-million-dot OLED touchscreen – the DL 14-85 and DL 18-50 have a tilting one, and the DL 24-500 goes a step further with a full Vari-angle screen.
