“Jimmy” has been a well-known photo editor in the sports world and is best known for editing SI’s ‘Leading Off’ series in the magazine.
James “Jimmy” Colton is Photography Editor of Sports Illustrated, coming to the magazine from Newsweek where he had been director of photography. Among his many other duties, he has presided over the Leading Off section of SI since its inception. Coming from a family of noted picture editors, he was named by American Photo magazine as one of the 100 most important individuals in photography. Not only an articulate and enthusiastic purveyor of the photojournalistic scene, he is an effective mentor including for the J Camp national program that recruits talented high school students of color as sponsored by the Asian American Journalists Association.
