Matt will share not only the technical aspects but also his creative process to help you learn how to make the most of your shoots.

Workshop outline

Session One: Breaking Down the In the Studio Shoot

This session will break down Matt’s approach to a studio shoot. We will cover: 

  • Breaking down modifiers & why to use them
  • Different angles for different light looks
  • Always varying your shots – Zooming in and out/moving around
  • Shooting a profile 
  • Working with a Senior – how to pose them, how to make them comfortable 

Session Two: Breaking Down the Athlete Shoot

In this second session, we will leave the studio and tackle an athlete shoot on location! This session will cover:

  • Matt’s go-to two light setup 
  • Underexposing the background vs. shooting with more ambient
  • Different ways to do it, HSS and ND and why for each
  • Using practical light to your advantage 
  • How to expose the image
  • Selecting a modifier
  • Hard light vs soft and mixing it up 
  • Action Shots
  • How to get your model to perform
  • What modifiers to use for action 
  • The business side of things 

Meet your instructor

Matt Hernandez

Matt is a portrait photographer based out of Kentucky who specializes in on location creative lighting focusing on seniors and athletes. He began his career as an award-winning graphic artist, and has since used those skills to help launch a very successful photography career. He has won multiple awards including the “People’s Choice Award” at the 2012 Google+ Photographer’s Conference, and The “Most Creative Award” at the 2013 Las Vegas Photoshop World Westcott Shootout. In 2013 he was chosen to represent F.J. Westcott as one of their “Top Endorsed Pros.”
