Great photographs utilized for the conservation of nature can move people to do something on behalf of wild lands, wildlife, and human communities. But there’s more to conservation photography than just snapping pictures. Join Amy Gulick and Dave Showalter, Fellows of the International League of Conservation Photographers, on a journey of inspiration and learning to give you the tools and confidence to pursue your own conservation photography projects.

Workshop Schedule
January 23, 25, 26, 30 and February 1, 2023. All Session begin at 8pm EST.
Session One:
In the Beginning: What’s your passion? In this session, we’ll explore how to take an idea and apply it to a conservation issue.
Session Two:
What’s the Story: Compelling stories are essential to move people to act for conservation. In this session, we’ll examine what makes a strong story and how to craft photos that best tell a story.
Session Three:
Pictures and Partners: The communications tools you create will, in part, be determined by the needs of your collaborative partners. In this session, we will explore various forms of conservation communications and how to identify and work with partner organizations.
Session Four:
Show Time: You’ve done your field work and created your communications tools—now what? In this session, we’ll talk about how to target audiences and broadcast your message.
Session Five:
Fast Pitch Party: Utilizing everything we’ve learned, you’ll craft and pitch your own conservation photography project.
Meet Your Instructors
Dave Showalter
Workshop FacultyDave Showalter is based in Colorado and focused on the American West. Dave has published two books – Sage Spirit, The American West at A Crossroads by Braided River (2015); and the award-winning Prairie Thunder by Skyline Press (2007). Dave’s photographs and articles have appeared in numerous publications, including Audubon, Conservation Biology, Outside, Outdoor Photographer, National Parks Magazine, High Country News, Wilderness, Colorado Life and elsewhere.
Amy Gulick
Amy Gulick is an acclaimed nature photographer and writer. Her images and stories have been featured in: Outdoor Photographer, National Wildlife, Audubon, Sierra, and other publications.
Her work has received numerous honors including: the prestigious Daniel Housberg Wilderness Image Award from the Alaska Conservation Foundation, the Voice of the Wild Award from the Alaska Wilderness League, and a Lowell Thomas Award from the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation. She is also the recipient of a Philip Hyde Grant for her work in Alaska’s Tongass National Forest, and a Mission Award, both presented by the North American Nature Photography Association.
Her award-winning books include The Salmon Way: An Alaska State of Mind (www.thesalmonway.org) and Salmon in the Trees: Life in Alaska’s Tongass Rain Forest (www.salmoninthetrees.org). Gulick is a founding Fellow of the International League of Conservation Photographers, a Fellow with the International League of Conservation Writers, a member of the Society of Environmental Journalists, and a member of the North American Nature Photography Association.
